Vintage toy ducks were first toy memory

When I remember my childhood, one of the first toys I remember owning was a set of vintage toy ducks. The ducks were made of wood and painted to look like ducks. They were linked together by a piece of clothesline rope and their little webbed feetrevolved on wheels as I pulled them across the floor — making a clacking noise as the feet wheel turned.

I must have been three or four years old when my parents gave me this fun little pull toy, which would have made the year around 1950 or 1951. I do remember this: My father had “recycled” those little vintage toy ducks from someone’s trash. They had been thrown out because one of the ducks was split and had a missing web wheel on one side. My dad, a terrific carpenter (he hand built my grandparents’ house in the late 1940s; it still stands), rehabilitated and reconstructed the pull toy and those vintage toy ducks were a source of joy for me as a little guy who didn’t know or care about the different between brand new and used toy ducks!

There are lots of toys and toy collectibles of all sorts out there. As a result, many people my age are intrigued by all vintage toys, and by Disney cartoon ducks like good old Donald. I love the old toys and old cartoons myself. But nothing will ever replace those cherished little pull toy ducks!
