Vintage toy ducks were first toy memory
When I remember my childhood, one of the first toys I remember owning was a set of vintage toy ducks. The ducks were made of wood and painted to look like ducks. They were linked together by a piece of clothesline rope and their little webbed feetrevolved on wheels as I pulled them across the floor -- making a clacking noise as the feet wheel turned.
I must have been three or four years old when my parents gave me this fun little pull toy, which would have made the year around 1950 or 1951. I do remember this: My father had "recycled" those little vintage toy ducks from someone's trash. They had been thrown out because one of the ducks was split and had a missing web wheel on one side. My dad, a terrific carpenter (he hand built my grandparents' house in the late 1940s; it still stands), rehabilitated and reconstructed the pull toy and those vintage toy ducks were a source of joy for me as a little guy who didn't know or care about the different between brand new and used toy ducks!
